Nutcracker Suite Baby | A Free Quilt Pattern

Ever since I made my throw-sized Nutcracker Suite quilt, I knew I wanted to make a baby version too! Other projects kept coming in the way, but finally I pulled out my fabrics (these had been purchased and planned for, oh, at least two months already), and got to work. I don’t know why it took so long to get this to you, but I can say that I’m glad I finally made it. Not only is this the sweetest and cutest baby quilt ever, and has no fabric waste, but it is FREE!!! That’s right, free pattern!

Get the FREE Nutcracker Suite pattern by signing up for my newsletter.

You’ll get both the baby and throw sizes when you sign up. The baby size uses a panel or feature fabric, 3 1/8 cuts of fabric for the flying geese and half-square triangles, and a yard of background fabric and finishes at 32“ x 38“.

For the backing, I used a super soft Target Flannel Sheet. Well, actually, I used the pillowcase! I ended up with a seam in the middle, since the pillowcase was sewn on both sides, but it worked! I love using flannel sheets as backings because they are really soft and hold up well, so I was thrilled to find a way to use the pillowcases too. My sheet set was a King size, so the pillowcases were bigger than the standard/queen size pillowcases.

Want to make one like mine? Here’s the fabrics I used for my baby sized Nutcracker Suite Quilt. Some of them are a bit older and getting hard to find, but they should be easy enough to substitute with something similar:

  • Feature fabric: Stof Fabrics Woodland in White Panel (this is an older fabric and is getting harder to find. I did find it here. I think Stof’s newer panel should also work).
  • Colors 1-3: Follie Lissa in Grey Cloud by Lotta Jansdotter, Foxy Fellas Tiny Stitches in Black by Michael Miller, and Mini Dots in Pepper from Kaufman Remix by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman
  • Background: Kona Ice Frappe
  • Binding: Mini Dots in Pepper from Kaufman Remix by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman
  • Backing: Target Flannel Sheet (read all about using sheets as backings)
