Zesty | A Quilt Pattern

I’m so excited to introduce Patchwork & Poodle’s third pattern, Zesty! I love orange peel quilts, which is slightly problematic since I don’t enjoy cutting or sewing curves. So I set out to create a modern twist on an orange peel quilt that didn’t involve curves. And while I was at it, let’s exclude template and foundation paper piecing too. Thus, creating a pattern that uses nothing but basic quilt blocks to create a stunning trick of the eye.

Zesty is available in my Etsy shop!

I’ve labeled this pattern as intermediate, only because I believe that having made a few quilts under your belt will help you match up points and trim the half rectangle triangles. However, I have diagrams and photos for every step of the way. Like every Patchwork & Poodles pattern, I want you to be successful and love the finished product so I strive to include all the information you need in my patterns!

Zesty is fat-quarter friendly and works great with prints and solids alike. There’s even a cutting diagram in the pattern for directional prints! It comes in 5 sizes – baby, throw, twin, full/queen, and king!

I made my pattern cover version in all PBS Fabrics painter’s palette solids. These are such fun, saturated, and bright solids! My favorite thing about PBS Fabrics is their opaque white. It keeps darker threads and fabrics from peeking through like they do with other solids brands. I love it!

Colors are: Abyss, Hunter, Moss, Paprika, Burnt Sienna, Revel, Peach, and Mist.
Background: White

I backed and bound it in one of my favorite fabrics ever, Doe Wide by Carolyn Friedlander. Sadly that fabric is getting harder and harder to find! I used the backing as my guide for walking foot orange peel motifs. Because what’s better than orange peel quilting on an orange peel quilt? Absolutely nothing. Read more about walking foot quilting here.
