Ever get stuck? That’s what happened to me. I worked on this Misty Mountains baby quilt back when Misty Mountains was getting released, and after I finished quilting it, I lost steam on the project. I know, I know, I was SO close to finishing! I actually just this week spent some time affixing the binding on THREE quilts. Yes, three. All of them have been quilted and trimmed for MONTHS and were just sitting in my quilting studio awaiting binding. One of them even had the binding made. It was one of those things that I just kept putting off, and finally realized it just needed to get done and there was no time like the present.

I’m really glad to finish this Misty Mountains baby quilt! It was the first one I ever made, the one I wanted to test out my math and angles (and thank goodness it all worked!). I pulled from scraps so I’m not actually sure what all of the fabrics are. I think some of the solids are Kona and some are Moda Bella, and there’s a Cotton + Steel sprinkles in corduroy print in there. The rest is a mystery. I used my fabric swatches to come up with a similar combination for you:
Color 1: Kona Eggplant
Color 2: Cotton + Steel Sprinkle in Corduroy
Color 3: Kona Ice Peach
Color 4: Cloud 9 Cirrus Solids in Coral (Could substitute Kona Salmon)
Color 5: Kona Shell
Color 6: Kona Peach
Background: Kona Snow
Binding:
Backing: I pieced a back using a big piece of Sunshine Collage Grey from the Sunshine collection by Cotton + Steel plus scraps from the front
When it came time to pick a backing, I wanted to keep using what I had on hand. I spent a couple of days with my quilt top on the floor surrounded by possible backing options, I just didn’t know what would look the best! I knew my favorite was the print on the bottom left, but I also didn’t have enough of that print for a whole backing, even on this baby quilt.

The solution? A fun, scrappy quilt back! I made an improvisational log cabin block, using scraps from the front as well as other coordinating solids and prints from my stash. I’m so glad I went this route because now I love the back as much as the front!

I hand-quilted it with a baptist fan motif. I have a whole tutorial on this from start to finish if you want to give it a try!

I bound the quilt in a Riley Blake Confetti Cotton solid. It matched and I had it on hand: win-win! I used my favorite big-stitch hand binding method. Learn how to do it here!

While quilting I noticed that there was a small hole in one of my fabrics. I left the piece alone while I completed the quilting on the rest of the quilt, and after finishing, I decided to add a small patch over the hole. I love the unexpected detail it provides, and that it secures the fabrics to be used and loved for many years to come without worry. I’m starting to be a lot more conscious about making my clothes last, and I’m just as passionate about my quilts!

I love the texture the hand quilting provides this quilt, and it has so many fun aspects, from the tiny patch to the scrappy back! I’m so glad I finally took the time to finish it after so long. Want to make your own? Find the Misty Mountains quilt pattern in my shop.
I adore the pieced back – and I don’t like pieced backs! Hmmmm…..
Thank you so much!
