Using Graffiti Hearts Offcuts | Ideas and Inspiration

using up your Graffiti Hearts scraps to create additional items for your home

So you’ve made a Graffiti Hearts quilt, congrats! It is one of my favorite designs and I’m sure you’re sitting there admiring your quilt. You’re also eyeing up that little pile of Graffiti Hearts offcuts from making the blocks. Want some ideas on how to use them up? Read on!

First, create HSTs using all the offcuts from Graffiti Hearts:

1. Sew together all the small stitch & flip offcut triangles to create HSTs, one background fabric right sides together with a color fabric. Trim to 1.75″. (depending how generous you were with your seam allowance, you may not be able to trim to 1.75″. If you can’t, then trim all HSTs to 1.5″).

2. Sew together all the large stitch & flip offcut triangles to create HSTs, one background fabric right sides together with the improv fabrics. Trim to 5.5″

You’ll have more offcuts if you made the throw size than if you made the baby or pillow size. This will impact what you’re able to do with them, as some of these ideas need more offcuts than others.

Graffiti Hearts Offcuts Idea 1: Make MORE Hearts

Using Graffiti Hearts offcuts to create a second quilt

Every Graffiti Hearts block you made can make a second heart. You’ll need some additional background or scrap fabric. Because these hearts are slightly different from the ones in the pattern and created with HSTs, you can choose to make the inside of the heart background fabric or improv fabric. I decided to make the inside of my hearts background fabric and the outside improv to make like an “inside out” version of Graffiti Hearts.

I also made two 10″ scrap heart quilt blocks as throw pillows! For these, I chose to make one heart with a background inside and one with an improv inside.

Graffiti Hearts Offcut Idea 2: Make even MORE hearts!

Using the smallest offcuts to create mini heart blocks

You can also make a bunch of mini hearts! These are a great idea if you choose to make the coordinating pillows (below) and are left with a bunch of tiny HSTs.

Graffiti Hearts Offcuts Idea 3: Make Coordinating Pillows

If you made a baby size Graffiti Hearts, you can make a coordinating Sawtooth Star pillow. If you made the throw size, you can make both a Sawtooth Star and an HST pillow.

Graffiti Hearts Offcuts Idea 4: Use Them on the Back

If you made a pillow size, consider using up your Graffiti Hearts offcuts on the back of your pillow! For my pillow size Graffiti Hearts quilt, I decided to use all my scraps into a scrappy improv back. I got a pillow back and less scraps in my scrap bin. Win-win!

If you want more ideas on how to use up your scraps right now and not relegate them to the scrap bin, check out this post!
